“Some people think that social media has a negative impact on young people’s mental health. Do you agree?”

“I agree that social media has a negative impact on young people’s mental health. This is because many teenagers spend too much time on social media, which makes them feel anxious and depressed. For example, they compare themselves with others and feel bad about themselves. Therefore, social media is harmful.”

“I contend that social media exerts a profoundly detrimental influence on adolescent mental health, primarily through the mechanism of social comparison. According to a 2024 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, teenagers who spend more than three hours daily on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are 42% more likely to report symptoms of depression and anxiety. This is not merely correlation — the study’s longitudinal design tracked 5,000 participants over two years, revealing that increased screen time preceded the onset of mental health issues. For instance, a 15-year-old girl in the study reported that after viewing curated ‘perfect life’ posts from influencers, she began to feel ‘inadequate and worthless,’ leading to disrupted sleep and declining academic performance. Such evidence underscores that social media’s impact is not incidental but systemic.”

(Journal of Adolescent Health, 2024)
(42% more likely, 5,000 participants, two years)
(15-year-old girl)
  • 有邏輯推導(not merely correlation → longitudinal design)

如果你篇文得『For example, many people…』

I believe… In my opinion…」

Simple Sentence”Social media is harmful.”20%
Complex Sentence”Although social media connects people, it also isolates them.”40%
Compound-Complex”While some argue that social media fosters community, the evidence suggests that it often exacerbates loneliness, and this paradox deserves closer examination.”30%
Inversion / Rhetorical Question”How can we claim that social media is harmless when 42% of teenagers report feeling worse about themselves after using it?“10%

Level 4 版本
“I think social media is bad for young people. They compare themselves with others. This makes them feel sad.”

“Although social media offers certain benefits, such as instant communication, it is crucial to recognise its darker side. When teenagers spend hours scrolling through curated images of ‘perfect lives’, they inevitably engage in harmful social comparison. This phenomenon, which psychologists call ‘upward comparison’, has been linked to increased rates of depression. Indeed, a 2024 study found that teenagers who use social media for more than three hours daily are 42% more likely to report mental health issues. How, then, can we ignore such compelling evidence?”

Para 1 (Claim):
Para 2 (Counterclaim):
Para 3 (Rebuttal):
Conclusion:

“Admittedly, some educators argue that smartphones can serve as valuable learning tools, enabling students to access educational apps, conduct instant research, and collaborate on projects. This perspective is not without merit — a 2023 study by the University of Hong Kong found that students who used language-learning apps on their phones improved their vocabulary by 15% over six months. However, this argument overlooks a critical flaw: the same device that facilitates learning also provides unlimited access to games, social media, and entertainment. The cognitive cost of resisting these distractions, known as ‘attention residue’, significantly undermines the supposed benefits. A more effective solution would be to provide students with dedicated, non-internet-enabled devices for learning, thereby preserving the benefits while eliminating the risks.”

(A more effective solution…)

  • “In today’s modern society, technology is becoming more and more important…”
  • “With the rapid development of technology, many people are concerned about…”
  • “It is an undeniable fact that…”

“In 2025, a staggering 78% of Hong Kong secondary students reported using social media for more than three hours daily. This statistic raises an urgent question: are we sacrificing an entire generation’s mental health for the sake of digital connectivity?”

“Last month, a 16-year-old Form 5 student in Causeway Bay attempted suicide after being cyberbullied on Instagram. Her story, though tragic, is far from unique. It is against this backdrop that we must examine the role of social media in young people’s lives.”

“What if the very tool designed to connect us is, in fact, driving us apart? This paradox lies at the heart of the debate over social media’s impact on adolescent mental health.”

結尾同樣重要,唔好用 “In conclusion, I believe that…”。改用:

“The evidence is clear: social media, as currently designed, poses a significant threat to young people’s mental health. But this is not a call for outright bans — rather, it is a call for awareness, education, and thoughtful regulation. The question is not whether we can afford to act, but whether we can afford not to.”

“Your school is considering introducing a four-day school week. Write an article for the school magazine arguing for or against this proposal.”

Level 4

“In today’s modern society, many people are talking about the four-day school week. I think this is a good idea for many reasons. First, students will have more time to rest. This is important because many students are very tired. Second, it can save money for the school. They can save electricity and other costs. Third, students can spend more time with their families. In conclusion, I believe the four-day school week is a good idea and the school should introduce it.”

“Imagine a school where Wednesday is no longer a day of groggy-eyed lectures, but a day for family, hobbies, and genuine rest. This is the promise of the four-day school week — a proposal that has sparked heated debate among educators, parents, and students alike. While the idea may seem radical, the evidence from schools that have already implemented this model suggests that it deserves serious consideration.”

Body Paragraph 1(Claim)

“The most compelling argument in favour of a four-day school week is its potential to improve student well-being. A 2024 study by the Education University of Hong Kong tracked 2,000 secondary students across 10 schools and found that those on a four-day schedule reported 35% lower stress levels and 22% higher life satisfaction. This is not surprising — the additional day off allows students to engage in extracurricular activities, spend quality time with family, and, crucially, get adequate sleep. In a city where the average teenager sleeps only 6.2 hours per night, an extra day of rest could be transformative.”

Body Paragraph 2(Counterclaim)

“Critics, however, argue that a shorter school week would compromise academic performance. They point to the fact that fewer school days mean less instructional time, potentially widening the achievement gap. This concern is valid — a 2023 meta-analysis of 15 studies found that, on average, students on a four-day week scored 3% lower in standardised maths tests. However, this statistic masks significant variation: schools that used the extra day for teacher training and curriculum redesign actually saw improved outcomes, while those that simply compressed five days into four suffered.”

Body Paragraph 3(Rebuttal + Solution)

“Thus, the key is not whether to adopt a four-day week, but how to implement it effectively. Schools should not simply shorten the week; they should redesign it. For example, lengthening each school day by 45 minutes can preserve instructional time, while the free day can be used for project-based learning, internships, or community service. This hybrid model, piloted in 12 Hong Kong secondary schools in 2025, showed no decline in academic performance and a 28% increase in student engagement.”

結尾

“The four-day school week is not a panacea, but it is a conversation worth having. As we grapple with rising rates of student burnout and mental health issues, perhaps the most radical thing we can do is to give our young people something they desperately need: time. Time to rest, time to explore, and time to simply be teenagers. The evidence is on the table — now, the question is whether we have the courage to act.”
